Writing is a skill that can always be improved. Spoken like a true perfectionist, I know; but hear me out. As authors (whether novice or seasoned), it's easy to forget that there is no such thing as perfect. It's effortless to get lost in the weeds of tone and intention without ever seeming to reach a state of complete satisfaction with our work. I can't even tell you how many times I have revised and rewritten and reworked a single sentence. That last one took seven attempts, as a matter of fact. The quality of your writing can impact how your ideas are perceived, how well you engage your audience, and how effectively you convey your message. While I am discouraging all of us from striving for perfection, my hope is that this blog post will enhance the quality of your writing by exploring a few practical strategies.

What does 'writing quality' even mean? Writing quality refers to how effectively you communicate your thoughts, ideas, and information through written words. High-quality writing is clear, concise, and engaging, allowing readers to easily relate to your message. To achieve this, you should focus on several key areas: clarity, coherence, and creativity.

Clarity is paramount in good writing. To be clear (Ha! Okay, sorry. Point made. Moving on), your ideas must be straightforward and easy to follow. Here are some tips to help improve the clarity of your writing:

• Use Simple Language: Avoid jargon or overly complex terms. For example, instead of saying "acrimonious," use "angry", "irate", or "bitter." This makes your prose more accessible to a broader audience. If you needed to Google the synonym you chose, your reader likely will need to as well, and the effect can be distracting. Readers often care less about the sophistication of language and more about the immersive experience of it.

• Be Direct: Get to the point quickly. Why say, "The decision was made by the committee to postpone the event due to the inclement weather conditions that were expected," when you could get the exact same message across with, "The committee decided to postpone the event because of the incoming bad weather."

• Logical Flow: Organize your content logically. Allow each chapter to have a purpose. Assigning goals to chapters is equivalent to placing steppingstones on the path for readers; each stone (or chapter) leads them further along the journey you are taking them on.

• Use Paragraphs: I know this seems like a no-brainer but never underestimate the power of a paragraph. They make writing so much easier for readers to digest and are a crucial tool for the pacing of your novel.

• Transitions: Transitions are instrumental for guiding readers through the narrative. They ensure that the flow of the story remains smooth and engaging, while seamlessly connecting scenes, thoughts, and actions. A thoughtfully placed transition helps the reader navigate shifts in time, place, and perspective without feeling jolted or confused.

While clarity and coherence are essential, creativity helps your writing stand out. Here are some ways to enhance creativity in your writing:

• Develop a Unique Voice: Your writing voice is your distinct style. Experiment with different tones and formats to find what feels right for you. Whether informal, conversational, or formal, your authentic voice enhances engagement.

• Storytelling: Storytelling captivates your audience and makes your writing relatable. Sharing a moment that inspired strong emotion within you, will likely resonate with many others. Your characters don't have to be you, but they can be inspired by the things that inspired and shaped you (in positive or negative ways).

• Exploration: Take the time to explore this world you've created and the people you've placed in it. Challenge yourself to map out their backstories, motivations, and personalities. Mix and match the characteristics of people you know in real life to create depth in your characters. Explore who they could be if they had your dad's OCD, your mom's fears of heights, and your sister's attitude all rolled into one.

Once you have completed your first draft, the real work begins—editing. Editing is crucial for enhancing the quality of your writing. Here are several key strategies to consider:

• Take a Break: After finishing your draft, step away before editing. At least three weeks. Yes, I'm serious. This break will give you a fresh perspective on your words, and the time away will allow you to marinade in all kinds of fun new ideas.

• Read Aloud: Hearing your writing can help you catch awkward phrases, run-on sentences, and other issues that might not be as apparent on paper. Awkward, sure; but trust me, it's worth it.

• Seek Feedback: Share your work with trusted peers who can provide constructive criticism. Being too close to your own story is a real thing. The insight of others may help you spot issues previously overlooked or offer suggestions for improvement. That said, I want to offer this important caveat: only share your second or third draft. The first draft is a sacred place between you and your story. NEVER share your first draft. You deserve the space to breathe life into the manuscript the way you want before giving others the power to speak into it.
