The Bookish Life of Nina Hill follows Nina, an introverted, book‑loving woman whose carefully curated life is upended when she discovers she has an entire extended family she never knew existed. The novel sets up a charming premise: Nina’s quiet routines, her trivia‑team nights, her bookstore job, and her preference for fictional worlds are suddenly interrupted by real‑life chaos and unexpected relationships. It’s a story meant to explore connection, identity, and the messy beauty of stepping outside one’s comfort zone.

This was a “Did Not Finish” for me — and that’s something I rarely say. I made it just under a hundred pages in before realizing I simply wasn’t connecting with the writing, the characters, or perhaps an unfortunate combination of the two. I couldn’t quite pinpoint the exact reason, but I found myself reaching for anything else instead of picking the book back up. And because I believe deeply in reading for pleasure, I decided to set it down and move on to something I’m genuinely excited about.

I want to be transparent about that choice because I think readers deserve permission to do the same. There is absolutely no shame in putting down a book that isn’t working for you. Not every story is meant for every reader, and forcing yourself through a novel out of obligation rarely leads to a better experience. When I’ve chosen to DNF in the past, I’ve never regretted it — and this was no exception. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for your reading life is to let go and reach for the book that does light you up.
