Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a novel with an intriguing premise that explores time travel through the lens of human connection and emotions. Set in a quaint café in Tokyo, customers who occupy a specific seat are given the chance to revisit the past or glimpse the future—albeit under a very strict set of rules. The story unfolds through four interconnected vignettes, each focusing on a different patron’s journey through time.

While the concept is undeniably compelling, I found the execution to be somewhat flat. The writing style struck me as overly simplistic, resembling the format of a stage play rather than a novel crafted with silky smooth prose. This may be partly due to nuances lost in translation from Japanese to English. Unfortunately, this simplicity made it difficult for me to connect with the characters.

Interestingly, many reviews hail the book's ending as sob-worthy. I don't consider myself heartless; I have read plenty of books that have emotionally wrecked me, but this one didn’t evoke that kind of emotional response. That said, I acknowledge that every reader’s experience is different, and what may not resonate with one person can strike a chord with another.

I still recommend giving this book a chance. Its unique premise alone may appeal to those who enjoy speculative fiction or introspective narratives. While it didn’t hit the right notes for me, the novel’s themes of love, loss, and human connection have clearly made a significant impact on many others. So, read it for yourself and decide.
